(Corpus Christi, TX) It’s that time of the year again to fill up the tackle boxes, put on some sunscreen, load up the boat and go fishin’. More than 35 patients from Driscoll’s Oncology & Hemotology Unit are getting ready for a full day of fishing with some of the areas best fishermen. Volunteers from the Coastal Bend Guides Association will be providing their expertise to give these patients a day of fishing they will never forget. Chemo Kids Fish Off was created for Driscoll’s young patients living with or recovering from cancer or blood disorders such as leukemia, different types of tumors, hemophilia and sickle cell. These children are facing their toughest battle and this day is made to brighten up their spirits. This is a day the children mark their calendars and set their alarm clocks. We have many of the children coming in from the surrounding cities to take part in this trip. Children from Corpus Christi, Rockport, Portland, Sinton, Robstown, Kingsville, San Diego, Freer, and Brownsville plan their vacation for this day. The event is a success every year through the help of the surrounding community. Coastal Bend Chapter of Credit Unions, Coastal Bend Guides Association, Palm Harbor Marina, Corpus Christi Hooks, Lyondell/Equistar, HEB, Circle K, Krispy Kreme, Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. and the Auxiliary to Driscoll Children's Hospital plus countless volunteers are making this year’s event a HUGE CATCH. The children are expected to cast their first line by 8 in the morning
and head back to land by 11:30am. As they venture into the water, each
child is encouraged to bring back a prize winning fish. Every category
from biggest fish, smallest fish, and most unusual catch of the day will
get a prize. Once on land, children will be served a great meal by Volunteers.
The day will conclude with the award ceremony and a chance for every child
to remember the day with a fish print.
