Pumps It, Inc. present … (Corpus Christi, TX) Driscoll Children’s Hospital and Pumps It, Inc. present Diabetes Camp at Sea, an opportunity to learn more about diabetes while enjoying a family-friendly cruise filled with fun! During 7-days, 7-nights, “campers” of all ages will be able to learn more about type 1 diabetes from internationally recognized professionals including pediatric endocrinologists, nurses, and dietitians. A truly unique learning environment designed especially for children with diabetes, their parents, siblings, extended family, and friends, Diabetes Camp at Sea will take place June 20 through June 27, 2004, aboard Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas, sailing from Galveston with stops in Key West, Grand Caymen, and Cozumel. Adults with type 1 diabetes and their families may also attend. "The ability to access the minds of international experts in the field of diabetes in a relaxed and casual atmosphere is almost unheard of these days,” says Dr. Stephen Ponder, Pediatric Endodcrinologist and Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Center at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christ, Texas. “This one-week cruise will allow participants a unique opportunity to increase their understanding of diabetes and its care, while in the comfort of a family holiday environment." During formal, professionally-led sessions, question and answer opportunities, and small group discussions sprinkled throughout at-sea transit times, campers will learn about the most up-to-date information regarding living healthy with diabetes, medical breakthroughs in diabetes care, and cutting edge technologies. The learning continues during informal settings such as poolside chats or dinner table conversations as campers mingle with diabetes professionals and other families facing similar challenges … and succeeding. The week-long cruise is diabetes-friendly … from ship to shore! Parents can relax knowing that in addition to the ship’s staff, camp specialists including pediatric endocrinologists as well as diabetic nurses and dietitians will be on board who can assist in diabetic emergencies. Camp dietitians will be working with the ship’s culinary staff to provide diabetes-sensitive meals. They will also be providing meals with carbohydrate count information. Much free time abounds so that campers can enjoy all that the cruise ship and island ports of call have to offer. In addition, children are offered their own programming … leaving parents to get some well-deserved R&R while on board! With its dramatic walls of glass and retractable canopy, Rhapsody of the Seas (www.royalcaribbean.com) offers magnificent ocean views, a spa, two swimming pools, whirlpool, rock climbing wall, and eight lounges. Cost of the cruise starts at $775 per person. Port charges, taxes, and fees also apply. To register please visit www.driscollchildrens.org/promo/diabetescamp.asp or call (800) 422-0711.
