(Corpus Christi, TX) There will be an extra sweet pay off for trick or treaters who turn in their Halloween candy this year! In an effort to encourage children to trade their sweet tooth for healthy teeth, Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s Orthodontics Department will hold a Halloween Candy Buy Back, paying $2 per pound of candy to local children. The event will take place on Thursday, November 1, 2007 from 9am-4:30pm in the orthodontics department located in McIver Furman Office Building on the 3rd floor behind the hospital.

“We can’t do anything orthodontically unless kids have strong healthy teeth and good gums,” says Deji Fashemo, B.D.S., M.P.H. “If kids do eat candy, they need to get the sugar off their teeth, especially if they are wearing braces.” The craniofacial orthodontist from Driscoll Children’s Craniofacial and Cleft Center hopes the event will educate youngsters on the bad things candy can do to teeth. He stresses all kids are going to eat candy, but moderation and brushing when done with candy is crucial to remember.

Dr. Faschemo’s tips include:

• Moderation is the key-especially when braces are involved!
• Stay away from sticky, hard candy such as jolly ranchers and taffy-like substances. It can easily get caught between teeth and disengages brackets and wires in braces.
• Take time to brush and floss frequently after eating candy.

Children will be given $2 per pound of candy they turn in. There is a five pound limit per child.
