New Alliance to Bring First Children’s Hospital to Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, TX - South Texas Health System and Valley Health Care Alliance, with Valley Baptist and Driscoll Children’s Hospital of Corpus Christi, are all combining resources to open and operate the Rio Grande Valley’s first and only hospital dedicated exclusively to children’s healthcare, Edinburg Children’s Hospital. Pediatric specialists will be able to treat an extensive array of medical conditions at a first-class facility close to home – eliminating unnecessary emotional, physical and financial stress during difficult times for children and their families.

Joining forces will bring additional healthcare services to our growing community. We are excited to work with our new partners and our ability to bring expanded care to children in our community,” said Jim Salyer, President and Chief Executive Officer for Valley Health Care Alliance.

When completed in early 2006, Edinburg Children’s Hospital, at 1102 West Trenton Road, will house a 14-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 14-bed pediatric oncology unit, an 11-bed step-down unit, 40 beds for general medical/surgical, and a 14-bed bay emergency department. Services such as radiology, laboratory, cardiopulmonary, two operating rooms and two special procedure rooms will be established. External construction is complete and work has begun on inside spaces with attention to special needs of children as well as flexibility for expansion and equipment advancements as demands increase.

Combining the skills of medical experts and administrators from all participating entities marries a broad range of experience and professionalism to create an exciting collaboration which will advance a shared mission – offering hope and healing to the children of South Texas.

“South Texas Health System and Driscoll Children’s Hospital have worked together for many years – enhancing healthcare services for children in the Valley. The opening of Edinburg Children’s Hospital and our affiliation with Driscoll and Valley Health Care Alliance are testimony to our commitment: Now children can receive primary and specialty care in a child-friendly environment without leaving the area for their healthcare needs,” said Dan McLean, Chief Executive Officer for South Texas Health System.

President and Chief Executive Officer for Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Rick Merrill said, “We are excited about this opportunity to partner with a respected and admired hospital. For Driscoll Children’s Hospital and its patients, this means having the name they trust in medical care for their children right here in their hometown.”
